West Coast’s Jack Graham Avoids Suspension After Controversial Hit on Fremantle’s Caleb Serong
West Coast Eagles midfielder Jack Graham has escaped suspension after being cited for striking Fremantle Dockers star Caleb Serong during Sunday’s heated Western Derby clash at Optus Stadium.
The fiery contest, which saw both teams battle fiercely for dominance, was marked by several heated exchanges, but none more controversial than Graham’s hit on Serong in the third quarter. The West Coast midfielder was caught on camera making high contact with the Dockers’ star, sparking an immediate reaction from Fremantle players and fans.
Match Review Panel’s Verdict
The AFL’s Match Review Officer (MRO) assessed the incident and ruled Graham’s actions as careless conduct with low impact to the head. As a result, he was handed a financial sanction rather than a suspension, allowing him to line up for the Eagles in their upcoming fixture.
Despite calls from some pundits and Fremantle supporters for a harsher penalty, the ruling was consistent with similar incidents this season. Graham was issued a $3,000 fine, which can be reduced with an early guilty plea.
Serong’s Response and Fremantle’s Frustration
Serong, who has been one of Fremantle’s most consistent performers this season, was briefly assessed by medical staff but returned to the field without any apparent issues. When asked about the hit post-game, the Dockers vice-captain downplayed the incident, stating, “It’s footy, these things happen. I’ll just move on and focus on next week.”
However, Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir was less forgiving, expressing frustration over what he saw as an inconsistent application of the rules.
“We’ve seen players get a week for less this season,” Longmuir told reporters. “We just want to see consistency in how these decisions are made.”
West Coast Rally Behind Graham
West Coast players and coaching staff have backed Graham following the decision, with Eagles captain Liam Duggan saying the midfielder’s aggressive approach is a crucial part of the team’s identity.
“Jack plays hard, but he’s never out to hurt anyone intentionally. We’re glad he’s available next week because he’s a key part of our midfield,” Duggan said.
What’s Next?
With Graham cleared to play, the Eagles will now turn their focus to their upcoming clash, while Fremantle will have to regroup after a hard-fought Derby loss.
The debate over the AFL’s judicial system, however, is unlikely to die down anytime soon.
